Mid-week market in Nelwyn.

The mid-week market is often full of small shots of fish from the inshore fleet like this smattering of monk form the New Harmony, a hard-won catch from off the Lizard...

or these banging bass from the likes of Cap'n Cod...

or these beautiful blonde rays from the trawler Shiralee...

and his sparkling plaice...

the only beam trawler to land was the Sapphire II who had decided to go with the cuttlefish...

while both the Gary M  and the Britannia V both put their trips of net caught MSC Certified hake ashore...

while outside the market the Girl Pamela takes on enough bait for a day on the pots - despite a scuffly forecast for the day as the back end of a front bringing wind and rain pass across the south west this morning.

The guys have all gone fishing on #FishyFriday !

Now it is still proper dark at 6am with the sun barely casting any light on the horizon leaves Tom peering into the gloom...

necessitating deck lights still on boats like the inshore trawler, Boy Lee...

much needed as the amount of free deck space is very limited...

apart from a dozen boxes from the Boy Lee on the market there was just a handful of line caught...

fish from the punts working for bass like these from Cap'n Cod...

and mackerel...

otherwise the market was devoid of any trip fish from trawlers, netters or beamers...

leaving cleaning down a quick job this morning...

out down the quays some of the boats are ready to sail...

while the lorry park waits expectantly for Monday...

which should see more than just a single trawler against the fish market...

when the rest of the fleet head for home to land.

It's all at your local Co-op now!

Hake, haddock, sardines and crab - Penzance Co-op has just started selling fresh LOCAL fish supplied by local fish merchant Matthew Stevens.  Can't get any less air miles and a smaller carbon footprint than that methinks!

Tons of top quality inshore fish up for auction toady.

View from the fish market out on to the big wide world...

while inside top-drawer fish like these bass and red mullet were landed by the inshore boats...

like these haddock from the Inisfallen...

and these lemons from the Shiralee...

made up a market with just the one beam trawl trip from the Resurgam on the market...

keenly contested by the local buyers like Seabourne Fish...

the omnipresent red gurnards keep an eye on things...

fifty'ish shades of yellow...

a tale of two sterns...

one of the inshore boats that landed this morning...

while the biggest boat in the fleet under skipper Bill Worth...

is set to sail as soon as she is iced and grubbed up...

just some of the back ropes for the crab fleet...

while they wait in tier...

the Mount is barely visible this morning...

the angle of the light, someone wasn't looking...

looks like it's going to be one of those dull days again...

as Spring tries to make its presence felt...

with the sea looking slightly ruffled this morning...

under Tom's watchful gaze...

at Wherry Town Plaza two skateboarders go head-to-head...

taking advantage of a dry spell...

to get in some early morning action...

say no more...

not the worst of seas to hit the prom.,,

as work continues on the prom.

It's #FishyFriday and fish are far and few between as the winter weather begins to bite.

Black and blue, just some of the Sapphire's cuttlefish catch...

a little dollop of herrings grace the market...

and a solitary black bream...

while these line caught pollack would make perfect #FishyFriday suppers...

keeping a bulging eye on things, the pout or 'Bothack'...

lovely big lemons...

monster megs...

and, easily spotted, these huge plaice from the James R H...

all keep the buyers happy...

getting a heads-up from which fish?...

many fish have big mouths but few can match the John Dory's gaping jaw in relation to its body size...

before the sun puts in an appearance...

the light is a heavy blue...

so the sky provides a contrasting backdrop to the boats in the harbour...

like the Sapphire II waiting to take fuel...

and the crab boats waiting for the off...

at the back of the Mission looking towards the gaps...

Tom keeps an eye on the Bay...

as a mackerel boat heads back to port alongside the Trinity House boat Galatea...

Newlyn has most of the fleet in port owing to the poor weather...

as the last of the groundworks is completed by Cormac on the beach at Wherry Town...

the skies look as though they are about to open up...

hastening this cyclist on his way...

looking back to Newlyn from the Penzance prom.
