Monday morning market in Newlyn
A big Spring tide on Monday morning finds most of the netting fleet back in port...
as two inshore potters take bait...
before heading down the harbour...
looks like sparks will be flying aboard the old Sarah Shaun later today...
dredged from the deep, an old inshore trawl footrope...
there's plenty of inshore trawl fish like these big haddock from the Elisabeth Veronique...
big hake...
and some even bigger turbot from the Karen of Ladram...
plenty more inshore line caught pollack...
more hake tails from the Charisma...
along with an unusually big run of cod...
to go with a decent shot of hake from Britannia V...
whose trip needed stacking seven boxes high ...
so as to make room for the buyers and auctioneer to negotiate around them...
must be the heat, there's bromance in the air it seems this morning...
and just a few kilos of the now crazily expensive mackerel...
almost as dear as these bass...
plenty more line caught pollack...
along with some huge turbot from Sid...
beam trawlers always pick up a few eight-leggers...
fish tally homemade style...
seems it takes two to lift a seven-stone fish box...
the beamer Twlight III weighed in with a few boxes of good flats...
while Cod tagged a few line caught bass, a long day's work for just a few fish...
and Cadgwith man Plugger picked up a shiny John Dory or two...
the Twlight III managed a few boxes of decent plaice...
there were some nice little touches of top-quality fish from the inshores...
auctioned by Ryan...
like these black...
and red bream...
the odd lobster...
and bigger plaice...
and even bigger ray...
brill...
ray wings...
John Dory...
stunning tub gurnards...
more ray...
all dispatched quickly...
and the market was noticeably cooler this morning with the usual wide door out of action...
which will no doubt please the site manager at Project Link...
there's a sort of miniature garden thing going on in the Harbour Office window...
while the Old Newlyn Post Office building that now plays home to Seafood Cornwall on the first floor and the Newlyn Archive on the ground floor now sports a new slate roof...
fish vans get ever more decorative...
Penlee Park are advertising heavily in and around Penzance, hoping the fine weather will still be around when the likes of renowned local folk singer/songwriter Will Keating...
and Sarah McQuaid take the stage...
for any visitor, apart from fresh fish, there's plenty of Newlyn souvenirs to be taken home...
more scaffolding outside the fish market as Phase Two nears completion...
one inshore trawler one scalloper...
Sid's Karen of Ladram in the morning sun...
one immature big-black-back-gull...
so that's where that brush went...
making her way back into Newlyn for the first time since her major refit at Toms of Polruan, the ex-prawn trawler Asteria...
heads for the fish market at high water...
as she has a date with the slip...
winches and net drums removed she is now all set for a new career working 1000+ pots a day crabbing...
no doubt her crew will love the skipper's idea of keeping the net crane on so that they can easily load the tons of frozen bait they need for each trip...
another visiting boat is the inshore scalloper, Jackdaw...
seen here taking ice...
that's a lot of wagon to keep shiny in this weather...
with Penzance Harbour lighthouse under-wraps, that man Christo would love the Penwith coastline here for sure...
both Scilly supply ships are in view this morning...
as is the parent dock company....
much of the seafront in Penzance is taken up by retirement or care homes...
for the more energetic, there's always the chance of seeing some of the more exotic wildlife that swim in the waters of Mounts Bay and beyond.
