Ripple on wheels

a conversation in the early morning sun.....
Probably the finest line-caught squid in the UK......when buying fresh squid look for the brown membrane on the outside of the squid's body - now that's fresh!
as fish and merchants bask in the early morning rays on a busy Friday morning market
The Ripple now sports an unusual feature - wheels! Let's hope the Pirates Rugby boys are man enough to pull her down to the sea on the 14th as intended!
Some fishermen have dreamt about being aboard their boat, but 'riding' it through familiar streets like a car - strange but true!

A plinth is born

The newly cast plinth for the Fisherman's memorial has now been cast......
and is about to be landscaped at the edge of Newlyn Green. The green is one of two areas of land where local fisherman are still entitled to spread their nets. The other is to the wet of the village on the side of Bowjey Hill.As the sun goes down the Valhalla steams into port.

Lady Hamilton crew taken off by lifeboat

The crew of the Lady Hamilton were taken off this morning after she was thought to have hit a floating log two miles off Falmouth.

Rinnetting for Cornish Sardines

'Trelawney Fish' boxes wait to go back aboard the George Johannes....
The smallest vessel in Stevenson's flrrt, the Cathryn makes landing at the fish market with young Edwin manning the pallet truck.
Just off the gaps, ringnetters Prue Esther and the Pride of Cornwall have shot their nets for Cornish Sardines. You can see the headline floats strecthing away from the boats. The Pride of Cornwall missed the fish on this occasion and had to shoot again. The Resolute, seen later in the video clip below, gets a shot in even closer to the gaps off Newlyn.

A short video of the boats ring-netting for sardines as the sun goes down.

Cornishcruising.com arrive

One of the few yachts to visit the port recently from cornishcruising.com
The EAW is revealed for all to see, now she lays completely opened from stem to stern..

just the entire port side remains intact...
a closer view of the for'ard section of the fishroom reveals the ice pounds
The last thing a flat fish would see of a small trawler's foot or groundrope before entering the trawl!

The short length of chain between the discs (all made from tyres) helps to stir up the seabed and scare the fish ahead of the trawl mouth. Note the first 10 or so rows mesh directly behing the fishing line (bound for protection with rope) are double twine to reduce the damage from conatct with the seabed and small stones.

Plans to get the Ripple wet!

A tranquil Saturday morning greets the Cornishman......
while the Jacoba's deck work is making good progress.....
and finally, John Lambourn is prepared to put his head above the parapet and give a firm launch date for the Ripple - she will go in the water the day after the official unveiling of the Newlyn Fisherman's memorial statue on Newlyn Green. There is a three day festival to celebrate all that is Newlyn between the 12th and the 14th of October 2007 - not to be missed!
the 4 foot mark on the Ripple's stem post...we don't say too much about the Ripple's port of registration however!the EAW is reducing in size rapidly....

Biggest tide of the year.......and a quiet night

Astern of the Roseland, and a rare sight these days, the North Quay almost devoid of active boats....
with not much activity in the harbour, time to take advantage of Newlyn's superb evening light....
an 8 cylinder Kelvin engine under its shroud.....
tubs of water aboard the Children's Friend lean her into the quay so that she will dry out safely....
some friendly football rivalry in the engineer's workshop....
never seen until recent years, and a sign of changing conditions, the biggest tide of the year reaches 20 feet.....
another use for scrap tyres, the end of some 'rope' or combination bridles.....
Badcocks Gallery have now un-packed their current show.....
and what's on show certainly catches the eye of passers by!
