Porthleven Food Festival 2018

Now in its 10th year Porthleven Food Festival celebrates everything to do with local food and produce - from beer to bread to fish - there's something for all the family...

as can be seen from the website's menu...

but first you have to get there and like all successful events in Cornwall with its narrow and singular roads in and out of ports - that means get there early!..

the main marquee was full of fishy themes...

and during the day played host to the Chef's Theatre...

with top cheffing tips coming thick and fast from the likes of...

Naomi Devlin – nutritionalist and author of River Cottage showcasing all things gluten free and gut healthy...

followed by fish maestro, Ross Sloan from the kitchens of the Mount Haven in Marazion...

with not a cloud in the sky the place to take time out was looking out over the harbour in front of the giant free music marquee and bar...

or take in any of the dozens of food, craft and other stalls dotted all round the port...

as the afternoon wore on the place to be was the slip...

in front of the Harbour Inn...

or a stroll down the iconic breakwater...

or the Ship Inn...

even the local gulls seemed to be enjoying the day...

there were reminders of how we have become increasingly concerned for the well-being of our seas...

but above all the message, as ever, was simple - Love Food!

Porthleven Food Festival

This time it was the sun not storms that no doubt helped to engulf one Cornish port at the weekend as floods of people descended on Porthleven for its annual Food Fest, opened by chef Anthony Worrall-Thompson........

there were plenty of local produce stands, Cornish Duck being one......
a huge demonstration tent houses a constant stream of entertaining cooking events throughout the day.....
the stalls showcase just how diverse the range of Cornish produce has become over the years......
with cured meats being a big favourite........
and in recent years sweet-toothed fans have plenty to choose from......
along with that ever-increasing cheese board that seems to grow ever broader year on year!

Film Festival - Pecheurs du Monde, Lorient

If you happen to be in Lorient, France between the 22nd and 25th of March then make sure you visit Pecheurs du Monde, the only film festival in Europe devoted to fishing around the world!

The Festival is a special cultural event that offers new or very recent films dedicated to the sea people of the world. These films introduce the public to magnificient areas full of dreams and freedom where tragedy and hardship exist but also happiness and wonder.

The Festival is a place of debates and exchanges. It not only invites us to discover images of the sea but also to debate on the main economic, social and environmental questions related to the fishing industry. Since its creation, more than one hundred movies dedicated to fishing and fishermen from all over the world were showcased. The Festival has also awarded and honored many French and foreign directors . The Festival is also a meeting place for all those who love the sea. Each edition gives the fishermen the possibily to speak about themselves. It enables the workers from the sea to introduce their world to the audience, to express their love for their jobs and to share their hopes and fears. After each film, debates are encouraged with the directors, fishing professionals, scientists and of course the public.

The Festival wants to introduce the young generations to the fishing world. The active participation of young people is encouraged. The students from the Lorient highschools are welcomed at the Festival where their enthousiasm is always very appreciated. The future of Fisheries lies also in the ability to pass on existing know-how and capacities.
