Ben Gunn (1945 – 2024) was a well-known fisherman-turned-artist who became a fixture of the Newlyn community. Originally from Wick in Scotland, he made his living as a commercial fisherman in waters all around the UK, including trips as far north as the Arctic. After many years at sea, he eventually settled in Cornwall, living on Fore Street in Newlyn.

Later in life, Ben picked up a paintbrush and channelled his extensive maritime experience into his artwork. He was a familiar and highly regarded character around the port, earning a reputation as a local legend. He even featured as a 'celebrity fisherman' in Lamorna Ash's book about the town, Dark, Salt, Clear, where he shared stories from his time fishing in the ice fields. Ben passed away at West Cornwall Hospital in September 2024 at the age of 79.
His colourful legacy and place the local fishing industry are still celebrated around the harbour today, with his original paintings continuing to draw - hence this excellent opportunity to own some of his highly original work being auctioned at The Swordfish Inn this Saturday - promises to be a lively affair!
