Its Open Studios time again in Newlyn.

The sixth year of the Open Studios scheme, which brings together artists and craftspeople who work in a wide variety of venues, from historic, beachside studios to remote cottages and chapels open their doors on Saturday 29th May. From potters and painters, through to conceptual sculptors, Open Studios is a real celebration of the amazing number of artists that live and work in Cornwall - it runs until June 6th.

Leaf through the pages of the online catalogue to see where artists' studios are and when they are open.
There are a number of Open Studios in Newlyn: Joy Batten - Nicola Bealing - Jason Walker - Lincoln Kirby-Bell while Samuel Basset, Judy Collins, Alexanda Higlett, Georgina Hounsome, Gillian Cooper, Henry Garfitt, Anna Jones, Catherine Luck Taylor, Mark Spray, Maggie O'Brien, Emma Turner, Juliet Paull, Paul Wadsworth, and Peter Wray can all be found at Trewidden Gardens, Buryas Bridge.

Open studios for Belinda Broadbent, Rose cecil, Leigh Berry, and Gemma Pearce can be found nestling in the streets of Mousehole.

Eleven new Newlyn Harbour Commssioners take on revised constitution.

Arguably the most significant event in Newlyn's long history, and sure to help map out a more certain future for the port, the signing of the Harbour Revision Order (HRO) by the new Secretary of State heralds the winds of change.

Years in the making, the HRO will see major changes to the constitution and the affairs of those who make a living within and from the harbour. Drawn up and accepted by the current commissioners, the new HRO adopts the principles of good governance as suggested by 'Modernising Trust Ports - A Guide to Good Governance' - first published by the Department for Transport in 2000 and subsequently amended in 2006.

Eleven permanent and three co-opted commissioners will take up office as of May 31st 2010 and will be keen to be seen operating within the spirit of the guidance, namely, "The core principles of openness, accountability and fitness for purpose form a common thread running through these standards and should feature in the direction and management of all ports in the trust sector."

They newly appoinred commissioners are: Gilbert McCabe, Edward Bolitho, Andrew Munson, David Stevens, Kevin Bennetts, Mike Collier, David Munday, Juliet Taylor, John Lambourn, Nick Howell, Elizabeth Stevenson, Andrew Bell, Ray Tovey and Glenn Caplin. More information on the backgrounds of the new faces to the port will be made available soon.

No doubt, top of the agenda at the first meeting on June the 9th for the new team, will be to discuss the current planned development of the fish market and auction to ensure that Newlyn continues to maximise its return from being in the heart of the best mixed fishing grounds around the UK.

Hair today.

Luckily, there's always a gentleman present on the market when the load's too heavy.....
hand line caught mackerel sorted by hand......
it's enough to bring a tear to a man's eye......
a helping hand, its team work for the men in the punts......
as they head back to their berths......
seems a shame England's largest fishing port is losing its Seafood Cafe to a hair salon!.......
one of the few Art Deco pools in the country looks resplendent in the morning light.

Fresh coat of paint does wonders for any boat.

There's a four-legged friend now with fresh paint on his paws aboard one of the boats.......
as the cherry picker makes life easier for Quentin and the rest of the tuna team aboard the Ben Loyal - owner Kevin Bennetts has been drawn back to fishing by his belief in the market for tuna by purchasing the Ben Loyal and equipping her with the latest tuna technology under the auspices of Captain Knights......
flat sea = scallops, more for the Fal Fish wagon to take ashore.......
the Star knows its market and won't let the odd coffee drinker interfere with its mission to serve up the best pint in town, this might have something to do with Mr Singing in the Rain.......

plenty of ballast headed for the Scillies......
and the Dry Dock has more work.......
she's looking better each day.

Not what you want round your prop!

If you recognise your trawl the IOS Steamship Company will be only too pleased to hand it back - especially after it wrapped itself around one of the Scillonian's props and stopping the engine dead.

Superstock powerboats arrive in penzance

There's a full programme of events both offshore and onshore this weekend as the UK round of Superstock hits sleepy Penzance. There's huge interest, not least from the youth of the ton as over a dozen local bands get to provide live music from a marquee on the prom.

Check out the slide show of early morning preparations in the Superstock headquarters.

The weather could not be better with a warm breezy easterly wind predicted to blow across the Bay.

French trawler Alya in Newlyn.

As harbourmaster Andrew Munson circles in the harbour punt alongside the Le Guilvenec registered trawler Alya that has been working north of Pendeen the inshore scalloper Morel Margh makes her way to the market.

Springwatch 2010 - stunning show of sea power.

BBC2 finished its Springwatch 2010 series with a look the interaction between fishing and the visually stunning display of feeding antics courtesy of killer wales and nautical extreme sports diving stars, gannets. Unmissable viewing as a lifetime wildlife photographer is left speechless and unable to find the words to describe killer wales as they chase down scraps of mackerel from the giant mid-water trawler Charisma.

Superstock in the mist?

It's a misty morn on the way to the Mount.......

there must be a few hands cursing they never went for the mackerel last night.......

just checking the numbers add up back at headquarters......
alongside the market the Defiant has slipped in under cover of heavy mist
not much doing for the Chris whom (at a quick glance, could easily be mistaken for another fisherman in a similar St Ives registered punt) and his boat Peter Pan this morning........
along the prom the powerboat organisers will be hoping for better visibility than this tomorrow.....
whereas the Mount just looks more and more inviting.
