The Cefas Endeavour is back out at sea on survey work again - this time it's the 2012 Eastern English Channel Beam Trawl Survey

Sunny with a chance of Sponge crabs

Posted by Mary Brown on 22 July 2012

We have made steady progress along the French coast. We are catching more and more plaice as we move eastwards.
The big yellow thing in the sky has put in a guest appearance and with little wind conditions really couldn't be much better.

Today we caught some sponge crabs. They are strange looking creatures with pink tips to their claws. In fact they are a similar colour to Jo's nail varnish! Sponge crabs cut up bits of sponge (or anything else if they can't find sponge) and hold it on their backs until it sticks. The sponge then grows as they grow. This one was released back to the sea after the photo was taken.

Shark pics cause bit of a stir on Twitter!

The now not so intrepid canoeist thinks twice about getting too close.

Just a handful of the comments trending on Twitter today after the photog behind Through the Gaps thought the National Press might like a summer holiday shark pic to liven up an otherwise stifling and sultry Tuesday morning - must try again next year!

The sardines are still proving somehwat elusive for some, the Asthore will be looking for a repeat of last night's last minute dip just off the Low Lee buoy! That's cutting it fine Mr Bullock!

Pollack Boarding

Dave Rhodes hauling in the Pollack board.
First fish of the day, which turned out to be a very slow day, only 5 fish to show for a few hours towing.
The new Iphone cover now modified so that it does not cover the lens in the top right hand corner. Tomorrow is another day!
