Cefas Endeavour summer Channel beam trawl survey

The Cefas Endeavour is back out at sea on survey work again - this time it's the 2012 Eastern English Channel Beam Trawl Survey

Sunny with a chance of Sponge crabs

We have made steady progress along the French coast. We are catching more and more plaice as we move eastwards.
The big yellow thing in the sky has put in a guest appearance and with little wind conditions really couldn't be much better.

Today we caught some sponge crabs. They are strange looking creatures with pink tips to their claws. In fact they are a similar colour to Jo's nail varnish! Sponge crabs cut up bits of sponge (or anything else if they can't find sponge) and hold it on their backs until it sticks. The sponge then grows as they grow. This one was released back to the sea after the photo was taken.
