Cornwall, especially West Penwith, is renowned for it's rich seam of creative talent - the combination of a landscape hewn from the hardest granite, the ever-present sea and the people contrive together in some mysterious alchemy that turns out an abundance of works for the enjoyment of others. This idiosyncratic animation, which features some well known characters and local boats - the George Johannes being one - tells the story of the Avalon Bell - enjoy with the sound turned up!

Le Breiz Connection
The Maritime museum welcomed some special visitors from Brittany last week to see their new exhibition which celebrates the links between the Cornish and Breton communities. The museum's new Breton Connection exhibition explores the age-old ties between Cornish and Breton fishing communities through a stunning collection of black and white photography. These images have never been exhibited before and draw on a rare collection of photographs taken by Oliver Hill in Newlyn in the early 20th century. The Breton Connection exhibition runs from until July 15 at the National Maritime Museum Cornwall, in Falmouth.

Sticking it out, or not?

Visibility Moderate, occasionally poor.- the skipper, along with all the other boats fishing in the area will have to make a decision whether or not to stay out at sea and dodge if and when the weather makes fishing impossible - or face the long steam back to Newlyn, or possibly a closer port like Baltimore in Ireland, for refuge. With over 12 hours time to steam to port, and another 12 hours to steam back out it can be better to stick out the weather, dodge and let the front pass through. However, with it giving Force 9 the chances are the boats will elect to make a run for home!
Update from the Battery Rockers - it's cold in there!
Although the sky had an intensley warm glow to it in the early hours of this morning the sea still has a decidedly wintry feel and look to it - as confirmed by some of the hardy Battery Rocks' swimmers who avail themselves of perverse pleasure as they take to the waters off the Jubilee pool every morning - come hail or snow.

"You are right it was cold, by the time we went down at 7.30, no more sun but a fantastic light..the Battery Rockers don't agree with radio saying sea is at 10ºC - we measured it at 8ºC this morning and 6ºC in the air, even WE think we're mad!!!"
Spend an evening with Monty Halls - The Fishermen's Apprentice
On Wednesday 2nd May at Truro College's Mylor Lecture Theatre at 19:00, writer, marine Biologist and BBC 2 Fishermen's Apprentice Monty Halls will be giving a talk on his latest television series.
Meet Monty and hear about his adventures and his time in Cornwall learning about the tough and dangerous lives of our Cornish fishermen. In conjunction with Waterstones Bookshop in Truro, Monty will also be signing his latest book 'The Fishermen's Apprentice' during the evening.
Monies raised during the evening will help the Fishermen's Mission charity to provide emergency and welfare support for fishermen and their families 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year at their welfare centre in Newlyn. Don't forget, the mission skipper Keith Dixon and the rest of the crew will be undertaking the extreme 3 Peaks challenge later this year!
