Under a mackerel sky, under new ownership - a must-do place to eat in Penzance

After over ten years of outstanding quality and service under the nurturing hand of Stevie McCrindle...

the Mackerel Sky restaurant in Penzance now has new owners who have already stamped thier own mark on this iconic Penwith eatery in the centre of town...

owner and chef Jamie MacLean's better half, art teacher Nina has added some colour and joie-de-vivre to the upstairs room...with this eponymous mural of Mount's Bay under a mackerel sky...

this squid in feather-light batter was a work of art in itself...

and like all the fish on the menu it doesn't get any fresher than that supplied by either the Newlyn Fish company or Mousehole Fish...

the welcome aboard sign outside means come on in and enjoy in any language!

The Avalon Bell of Cornwall

Cornwall, especially West Penwith, is renowned for it's rich seam of creative talent - the combination of a landscape hewn from the hardest granite, the ever-present sea and the people contrive together in some mysterious alchemy that turns out an abundance of works for the enjoyment of others. This idiosyncratic animation, which features some well known characters and local boats - the George Johannes being one - tells the story of the Avalon Bell - enjoy with the sound turned up!

Update from the Battery Rockers - it's cold in there!

Although the sky had an intensley warm glow to it in the early hours of this morning the sea still has a decidedly wintry feel and look to it - as confirmed by some of the hardy Battery Rocks' swimmers who avail themselves of perverse pleasure as they take to the waters off the Jubilee pool every morning - come hail or snow.
Of course, on days like the one above the swimmers have to make do with the (relatively) calmer waters inside Penzance Harbour!

Here's a comment received today from them:

"You are right it was cold, by the time we went down at 7.30, no more sun but a fantastic light..the Battery Rockers don't agree with radio saying sea is at 10ºC - we measured it at 8ºC this morning and 6ºC in the air, even WE think we're mad!!!"

What a picture.

Luckily, members of a Bedford Art Club are undeterred by the lack of sun for which Newlyn has drawn artists from all over........

latest boat to join the fleet in Newlyn, a new crabber joins the Rowse fleet.......
often spotted on the AIS fishing up channel, the Grand Saint Bernard was pulled in by a Fisheries Protection boat......
always gear to do.......

poles at the ready.......
the Navy guys take a stroll after coming ashore form the detained Grand Saint Bernard......
