Join the enforcement team and help us to manage fisheries in Cornwall’s inshore waters.
In this varied role you will join a small team of enforcement officers carrying out compliance and enforcement of fisheries and marine environmental legislation throughout Cornwall. The job involves you working at sea on our fisheries patrol vessels and visiting coves, ports and premises. As a warranted officer, you will take part in inspections of fish and shellfish catches, fishing gear and relevant documentation. Some of the work is physically demanding. You will be required to undertake boardings at sea, as well as act as a crew member or RIB coxswain, subject to training and qualification. You will gather evidence and produce witness statements in relation to suspected fisheries offences, as well as having a significant role in the completion of prosecution case files. At all times, the ability to communicate effectively and deal tactfully and appropriately with challenging behaviour will be essential to succeeding in this role. Due to the nature of fisheries enforcement, you will be expected to work flexibly including some weekends and evenings/nights and there is a 5% additional payment in recognition of this.
About You (Skills, knowledge, qualifications)
You will assist in investigations and enforcement action and with training you will be expected to lead inspections and investigations. You must be physically fit, able to hold an ENG1 medical certificate and you must have a full UK driving licence. You will demonstrate excellent inter-personal skills and have the confidence to communicate with, and work alongside, a wide range of people in often challenging circumstances. Some knowledge of commercial and recreational fishing and its regulation would be an advantage but comprehensive training will be provided to the successful candidate in order to obtain an inshore fisheries and conservation officer (IFCO) warrant.
