Summer fog hits Newlyn.

Walking along Newlyn Green and there's no sign of the largest fishing port in England early on Sunday morning...

and not much better in the harbour itself...

with the Twilight busy landing at the market...

the new plastic curtain doing its job...

as the visibility slowly increases...

the old quay finally revealed...

the Resource Centre build it by numbers kit has been delivered...

and the lifting gear to put the girders in place...

things are a little clearer on Monday morning...

with some cracking quality fish like these John Dory...

and monk tails up for auction...

along with huge landigs of Mediterranean octopus which are still being caught all along the south coast...

there were good landings of red mullet...

and the usual mix of ground fish...

to go with even more eight-leggers stacked high in the day-boat fridge...

along with this very respectable landing of bass from young Mr pascoe...

and a good run of mackerel for some...

heading away from the gaps, Claude Henry...

as the Crystal Sea is passed by the dive boa Seeker...

closely followed by the Padstow registered crabber...

Isabelle heading in to land...

and that's all just before...

Mr Stevens sets sail to look for his ends, no doubt the possibility of struggling to lift pots full of octopus is also filling him with dread...

things must be bad across the pond...

and still the sardine tubs keep coming!

the latest crabbers to joing the Rowse fleet side-by-side...

two fishy-themed flags flying on the prom and even one of those is octopus inspired...

it was a quiet market at the end of a a busy week...

with fish mostly from Enterprise...

that's another harbour fender nearing completion, three down, three to go...

time for a stroll up the quay...

more signs the sardine season is not far away...

just a few of the fuel tankers that service the fleet...

what it will look like...

what it looks like now...

some interesting plans are in the making for the the new boatshed which sits...

on the same site as the old one, this photo was taken back in the day when the road was built across the beach that separated Newlyn Old town which grew around the Old Quay, from the Tolcarne area and the Coombe river. Explore the history of the Old Harbour here.

Newlyn's Old Quay, still very much inspiration for artists painting in the footsteps of Harold Harvey and Forbes.

Over 100 years ago, one of the great Newlyn School members, Harold Harvey captured this view of the Old Quay - when the outer parapet wall was still intact...

wind the clock forward and the harbour once again plays host to artists keen to capture the timeless quality and light of the place in oils on canvas...

under the expert eyes and guide of Vicki Norman...

seen here with a group which included three artists who hail from across the pond in Atlanta!..

with the Old Harbour restoration work now well underway the local lugger fleet are expected to return as they make the Old Quay their permanent base - which will mean more artists will be able to enjoy authentic scenes such as the lugger Painting Days once again. Put a date in your diary for this year's Bank Holiday weekend at the end of August!

Another busy Monday morning in Newlyn

Boats of all sizes and fishing types landing to the market this morning...

from the visiting Padstow crabber, Isabelle...

to the punt Boy Brax and the inshore fixed gear boat, Girl Pamela

landed over the weekend, fish from the netters included hake from the Britannia V...

and the Ygraine...

there's some serious earth moving going on along the road to Mousehole, no time like the height of the season to fix the cliff...

34 dredges hang from the sides of the Halcyon, latest edition to the Scottish scalloper fleet.
