Crabbing in style aboard the Amadeus

The first part of the video follows a huge Dutch beam trawler in the process of hauling and shooting her gear in a near gale filmed from the wheelhouse of the Amadeus. Then the action returns to the crabber and time to exchange a few quiet words with skipper Jamie McDade. Here the camera takes the viewer on a guided tour of the wheelhouse and a bird'e eye view of the man on the hauler in action before heading off down below the the shelterdeck to see the crew cleaning and baiting just some of the boat's 1,500 inkwell pots during a spell of fine weather. Later the action switches to night time fishing by nwhich time the weather has deteriorated badly and the boys are having to haul the gear on a heaving deck in a gale of wind. Flying aboard, a wet pot full of crab can weigh 50-60 lbs or more - these boys make the job of picking the pots up over the side of the boat on to the sorting table look so easy - it isn't.

Amadeus is one of two potting vessels owned by Trevor Bartlet based in Dartmouth, Devon. She is one of the biggest crab fishing vessels in the UK.

The boat is currently working off the Danish coast - a long way from her home registered port of Teignmouth.
Bigger crabbers like the Amadeus are fairly nomadic and travel the watersaround the UK working a wide range of crabbing grounds in search of brown crab. They are among the highest days-at-sea boats in the UK fleet as they can fish in almost any weather - and do.

Fisheries researcher heads up the top 3% of papers read at University of Plymouth!

Relevant and reliable data is everything in research

Some of the best research on the fishing industry is being carried out in the South West. Notably, people like Maria Campbell from University of Plymouth with paper, 'Priority questions to shape the marine and coastal policy research agenda in the UK'.

The fishing industry needs more papers like this from well-advised researchers and bodies like the Marine Policy Group who are able to empathise with the industry to achieve a solid future through developing trust and respect for the work of both disciplines.

more often than not referred to locally as the Bothak - so named because of its ability to puff out a film from the eye on being taken out of the water - from the Cornish word meaning swollen or humped. there is a grand opening party here this afternoon at 4pm to signal the end to a three-month project to repair the sea defences on Newlyn Green. An official ribbon-cutting to re-open the green will take place at 3.45pm with all local residents invited to attend. People will be able to visit a display trailer from 3.30pm to view progress photos and find out general information about the work undertaken. There will also be the chance to ask questions to Cormac staff and Cornwall Council officers about the work. Teams of 14 men have been working 11-hour shifts to ensure the green was usable in time for the Newlyn Fish Festival and Newlyn raft race at the end of last month.

FISHSTOCK 2014 IS ON TOMORROW!

The Multi-Award Winning Seafood & Music Festival “Fishstock Brixham” ® will be back in Torbay this Saturday 13th September. New sponsors for this year, Morrisons are pleased to join event supporting fish firms Brixham Trawler Agents, Coombe Fisheries, Falfish, Interfish, Ocean Fish and Paramount21, along with solicitors Kitsons and insurance brokers Maritime International Solutions, in helping the team at Fishstock Brixham to put on an even bigger and better show this year, all in support of the Fishermen’s Mission. The event is also very grateful to Torbay Harbour Authority & Council for allowing the use of the Fish Market and Quays for this public event.

Fishstock Brixham 2014 is a public, licensed fund-raising event, exclusively for the Fishermen’s Mission. Since the first Fishstock Brixham was held in September 2008 £43,000 has been raised and donated to the Fishermen’s Mission. All surplus of income over expenditure is donated.

The event is a one-day celebration of seafood, fishing & maritime heritage with public displays of fresh fish, fish fileting & preparation, seafood cookery demonstrations, food and drink sales, music and dance entertainment, artists, artisans and activities for children.

Children of all ages can enjoy learning seafood preparation and cookery in the “Food is Fun” classroom kitchen marquee, sponsored as part of the “Morrisons Fisheries & Education Zone”. Classes will be led by tutors from the Catering & Hospitality Unit kitchens of South Devon College.

Seafood aficionados will be enthralled by chefs on the 2 “Food is Fun” Theatre Kitchen Stages. This year’s demonstrations will feature Simon Hulstone from the Elephant, Richard Jenkins from the Globe Topsham, Andy Sewell from the Quayside, David Jones of Manna from Devon, David Galpin from S D College plus Graham from the Old Market House, Phil from the Quayside and Felicity of Brilliant Fish. Duncan & Sue Lucas will perform fishy knife-craft skills on stage with Terry Martin from M&J Seafoods. Their wet-fish displays demonstrate they are “Passionate about Fish”.

Kitsons are once again proud to be sponsoring the Brixham Chefs Piazza, where this year the focus will be on delicious Cajun Fishcakes donated by S Devon firm “Paramount21”. These home-cooking specialists will also prepare Mackerel donated by Interfish, Plymouth in Baps donated by Morrisons. There will be also delicious scallops & chorizo, with grateful thanks to Falfish and Coombe Fisheries, who also sponsor our musicians sound stages. The Brixham Chefs, led by Ron Campion and Janice Cooke will man this kitchen until supplies run out, with all proceeds for the Fishermen’s Mission! There will be boats alongside to tour, including the Barentszee (modern Beam Trawler) fresh out of refit and heritage trawlers Vigilance and Pilgrim (as toured in Brixham by their Royal Highnesses, Charles & Camilla in July 2013. Coming alongside for public tours will be RNLB “Alec & Christina Dykes”. This year the event that celebrates great fish & seafood with fabulous music on 2 stages boasts a fabulous music line-up with Torbay’s “These Reigning Days” headlining the Coombe Fisheries main stage at 2150 for a spectacular finale.

They will be well-supported with a full line-up of talented local and regional rock and pop bands. To open the show will be “Jumping Out Jazz” from Cornwall. We will then introduce the Brixham crowd to the “FishWives Choir”, the fishing industry’s answer to Gareth Malone’s Military Wives. These lovely ladies, many of whom are widows of fishermen, raise awareness of and funds for the Fishermen’s Mission. The ladies are followed by “Gravity Storm”, “Dodgey Practice”, “Pete Canter’s Light Flight”, “Classic Gold”, “The Clock Surgeons”, sounds of Rod Stewart with “Gasoline Alley”,pre-teen idols “Hysteria”, then Brixham boys “M.I.U.”

60s rockers “Duke Johnson & the Scorchers” will get the crowd jumping ready for the fabulous finale with , “These Reigning Days”, fresh back from Vladivostok and soon to launch their debut album “Opera of Love”.
