Political humour in the style of the Newlyn School

Local artist Zoe cameron (no relation to the new PM David) caused something of a stir at a David Lay's auction recently with her picture depicting a woman spanking ex-PM Gordon Brown over her knee.

The market for gilts - but not of the stocks and shares variety.

Little or no wind greeted the Bay this morning......
as the number (and size) of visiting yachts increases......
with the paint barely dry on the derrick.....
it's time to lift it back aboard.......
the Billy Rowney.......
astern, the scalloper Jacoba is in port about to put her dredges back in good order.....
after landing her catch to the waiting Scottish transport......
on the market the Irish presence manifests itself ...... with a good shot of hake......
and a big trip of quality fish from the seiner........
the western end of the market was full of net fish......

and a box of gilthead bream - much favoured by Roman epicureans of yore - from a small inshore boat.

All at Sea - a race at sea with a difference.

No doubt this programme will have purists in all camps looking long and hard at how the motley crew cope aboard three very different vessels - but all hands in Newlyn will be rooting for the trawler to see the rest of the fleet off!

Programme details courtesy of STV.

Swordfish makers and purveyors visit the harbour.

Having put in a brief appearance the mackerel are making life hard for the handliners......
a late night and early morning, but the troops from the Wiltshire based Wadworths Brewery coped well and enjoyed their guided tour of England's top fishing port, they even have a beer named after one of Newlyn's pubs.......
bright light at first light, the heavy metal men get off to an early start working on the beamer's derrick.......
multi-purpose traweler-netter from Ireland, the Girl Geraldine.........
keeping up with the news - with most of Cornwall being Lib-Dem with two seats going to the Tories, local MP Andrew George should be able to get his message across in Parliament in a way that wasn't possible untill a few hours ago.

No shots fired but there's a battle over shells.

For around forty small inshore boats off the NE coast things have become serious after several huge scallop trawlers from TN Trawlers have begun working in the area. Pictured above is one of TN's trawlers in Newlyn, June 2008.

Mid-tide landing for the netters.

Plenty of work still to be done aboard the Admiral Gordon while she is in Penzance wet dock.....
astern of the Plymouth Marine Laboratories' MBA Sepia......
that's starboard side below the waterline treated on the steel yacht......
there's not too many cuttles about at this time of year so the Resurgan has bagged a few octopuses.....
while at the western end of the market the netter Ajax has put ashore an excellent run of hake in this mid-tide landing.....
plenty of ice on the Cadgwith based Lizard netter Scorpio's fish.......
and the boat is going straight back to see as her insulated tubs are being topped up with ice again......
which boat?.......
full contact details for Newlyn's main MCA man, Mike Collier......
homing in on breakfast........
as the netter Berlewen makes her way in to land......
before heading back out to the grounds north of the Islands in the afternoon......
you just can't keep those St Ives boats apart........
plenty of survey work in the area at the moment......

while some pot mouths are cut out on the crabber Pen Y Glas.
