Newlyn jeweller Joseph Lamin's competition prize.

The Daily Telegraph is currently running a competition to win a voucher for Newlyn jeweller Joseph Lamin. With a workshop in the heart of Newlyn, he is ideally placed to make good use of local resources - many artists are drawn to the area by the surfeit of inspiring land and seascapes and the quality of the light. In Joseph's case, he goes one step further in his jewellery pieces - he makes casts from carved cuttlefish backbones that have washed up on the beaches.

Tuesday's market.

Unusual to see whole monk on the market courtesy of an Irish beamer.....
at this time of year it pays to get the fish off to a cold store as soon as possible......
especially fish like megrim soles - with the beamer fleet heading for the deeper water and making up good trips on these prized flat fish, sometimes referred to as Cornish Sole.....
no mackerel in the Bay this morning means the gulls are on the scrounge again.....
but for some its another day of sunshine.......
whether heading in or out.

Calamity - no tea to be had in the Mission!

With the Mission in Newlyn shut the only place for a cuppa was back in Penzance in the Docker's Rest cafe next to the Buccaneer Shell Shop......
eventually, the Newlyn Harbour Cafe came good for round two......
which left some time to enjoy some new additions to Badcock's Gallery......

that includes some highly affordable and collectible examples of contemporary Newlyn Copper......

Short walk to St Loy - the beach with some of the biggest grains of sand in the UK.

At this time of year the biggest surprise if you go down to the woods will be a sea of bluebells......
as you make your way along the clearly defined path which provides ample protection from the wind (useful in the depths of winter)......
and on the way to the secluded beach at St Loy you can enjoy a miniature version of Niagra.....
and then the biggest grains of sand on the beach itself.......
on the way back via the Bill Carbis' commemorative garden.......
and one of the biggest chimneys in west Penwith - reason unknown......
taking care to avoid tangling with the odd local domestic pets.

Not likely to miss this German tour bus in your rear view mirror.........
there's no smoke without fire, especially in your chimney........
on an otherwise pretty quiet night.

Grab a pint and a picture at the Tolcarne Inn

For a few days more, Nick Henshall's superbly evocative charcoal drawings that capture fishermen at work in the port will be on show at the Tolcarne Inn over the Bank Holiday this weekend. Why not take shelter from the forecast heavy rain and enjoy a meal or just a pasty and pint while you take in the moody pictures and soak up the atmosphere of an historic harbourside pub........

if you are there around 8pm on Saturday evening you'll get the chance to join in some May mayhem and madness as the May Horns procession assembles and then wends its way via the sidetsreets and lanes before coming to a halt at the Admiral Benbow in historic Chapel Street.
