Warped

The roadside at Wherrytown looks more like the Strip in Vegas these days......
though there are parts of Newlyn well lit including the blue-light area.....
atop the Mission roof the job of returning the golden galleon windvane to its rightful spot appears to have brought about a major construction job - judging by the amount of scaffolding perched on the roof - gone are the days of two lads, a couple of ladders and a few lengths of rope scrounged from down the quay......
fresh boxes wait to go back aboard the Cornishman.....
but not before the gear is put back together.....
while the winds blow boats get to grrips with the ongoing maintenance required to keep them working, the Nellie gets a new set of warps aboard in the gathering dusk......

while the Dom Bosco's shelterdeck gets a good washdown at the end of a hard day.

Against the tide

Some fleet footwork from David Stevens Snr means that......
David Stevens Jnr can turn the boat using a spring against a strong wind blowing across the harbour from the South.

Snow

More like a dusting of icing on a cake, Newlyn gets some snow for the first time this year.....
with the quay glistening under the lights.....
a couple of visiting Brixham beamers landed.....
looks like Dave Barron's, Newlyn's historic newsagent has a well insulated roof space.

A tale of two divers

With not only the boats sheltering from the weather and attracting a bit of attention from twitchers, this Great Northern Diver is one of half a dozen or so in port, seen here with a local herring gull and cormorant.....

while up the harbour there are a small number of oil retaining booms that have been rigged to capture any oil fom the stricken boat that may be floating on the surface under the quay.

Despite the forecast

The Crystal Sea II takes ice watched by a handful of young anglers....
it was fundraising day for the RNLI and the Swordfish was doing its bit to support......
as the grub goes aboard these guys know they are in for a bumpy ride with a big sea running and worse forecast....
the Ajax sits low in the water having just taken on her ice for the next tide's netting trip.

Cornwall tops the call-outs and shouts for the RNLI in their busiest year ever

Seems the weather last year helped to up the number of shouts for our worthy friends aboard the Ivan Ellen and other lifeboats boats up and down the South West's coastline. Falmouth's all-weather boat was called out 104 times while the Ivan Ellen's shouts were 23 more than the previous year. See the full story here.
