Face the wind

A bleak view across the Bay from Newlyn Green, a stretch of land still reserved for local fishermen to spread their nets if so needs be (like the patch of ground to the west of the Bowjey, now well and truly overgrown)...
the fleet is back in port owing to a highly unseasonal gale, watched over by the memorial statue....
visiting Irish beamer Mary J has shifted to safer berth alongside the market for the weekend...
while the Jacoba appears to be contininuing with last years creative streak - is this their entry for the Turner Prize boxed up and reagy to go? It's title is 'Girvan' apparently.

now there appears to be something missing aboard the Jessica Grace it seems?

Colourful bits despite the inclement weather

A good place to eat when the sun shines, Indulgence gives a poolside view of the finest Art Deco outdoor pool in the Westcountry and fine food to boot....
the Sea King has moved to the dry dock for repairs.....

Gales? but it's July

Saturday morning is greeted with an incoming gale keeping the prom clear of visitors...
which keeps a handful of fishing visitors from Devon in port....
among them the stern trawler Ocean Spirit.....
which the crew have a hard time getting against the quay to board her....
big new Ebonne, crabber from Brixham amongst them....
I wonder how the cyclist is and have the MCA been informed about this collision?.......

not what the organisers of the Sea Salts and Sail festival want to see this morning, the weather will keep the old luggers and other visitors away from the harbour - they would stand a good chance of damage when grounding as the tide drops away in the harbour - the boats are currently on pontoons in newlyn....

and just to make the point the harbour office has put up a warning sign for any visitors who haven't noticed the conditions.

Training advice available in the Mission next week

Richard Phillips from Plymouth Maritime Training will be in the Newlyn Fishermen's Mission on Monday the 7th July from 2.30pm to offer Fishermen advice and guidance on training pathways and qualifications.

Mousehole's Sea, Salts & Sail festival starts today

there's some of survey work being undertaken close inshore.....

as predicted by local skipper Stefan Glinski at the MSC accreditation meeting last week, Cornish sardines turned up on Tuesday...

nearby, a healthy shot of quality netted fish including monk and turbot was landed by the Sowenna.....

in readiness for the festivities this weekend in Mousehole....

there is a bright and cheerful sign to greet visitors and locals alike for what promises to be a real treat for lovers of all things connected to the sea including amongst other 'quay' events the famous Mousehole Male Voice choir and the 'Kipper Man'! And it's not just fishing that Newlyn makes waves around the world, Newlyn Green played host to an event back in the 70s that has grown into a truly international affair!

as if fishermen didn't have enough to cope with over fuel, here is the pose of a man contemplating the way the world is when installing a brand new £30,000 main engine becomes an exercise fraught with teething problems.....filling a bucket full of fuel and timing how long it takes to empty being the suggested method of calibrating the new engine's fuel pump is hard to take given the technology available in 2008!.....

Trawling, then and now

Two boats in blue have moved for the first time in weeks, the seiner/trawler Valhalla with her new Caterpillar main engine, now being commissioned and the George Johannes after her paint-up.....
In front of the harbour offices, Roger Coutsoubus tightens a shore rope while waiting for his inshore stern trawler to ground 'on the hard' so that her bottom can be anti-fouled....
one of his old commands, the Anthony lays ahead of him also undergoing paint and repairs. The photo of the Anthony, a traditional sidewinder trawler, was taken from the Jacqueline, seen here in behind one of the Penlee Quarry 'trains' that used to load stone boats on the South or 'Stone Quay' as it was known locally. The photo may have been taken when the Jacqueline went for a major refit which included a new wheelhouse - there is no radar atop.
