Newlyn Orion Art Gallery - the Lineage Show

Now showing at the Orion Gallery until the 6 December, Lineage gives current Newlyn Society of Artists a chance to explore now, and then.
A busy evening market....
as the landing gear comes down....

Nailed to the mast

Plymouth Marine's research ship, Plymouth Quest is having a few jobs done in Penzance dock including a new deck crane.
Sadly, the 100 year old St Ives lugger Barnabus is still sporting a writ on her mast.
Back in Newlyn its back to the netting for tuna pole boat Nova Spero.
Seems the Jacob's scallop handling gear is nearly complete.
Overnight, the Ripple stayed afloat......
much to John's relief!

Princess Royal unveils Newlyn Fishermans Memorial

Waiting patiently in overcast conditions an expectant crowd waits for the statue to be unveiled....
some gained unusual vantage points on the green....
while others, in the Orion's new extension, enjoyed a balcony view of the proceedings....
Penlee Lifeboat Ivan Ellen, CSFC St Piran and the MCA's Anglian Princess provided a guard of honour....
and Newlyn Male Voice Choir greeted the Princess as she made her way to the waiting guests...where she was greeted by harbour commissioner Douglas Williams .......
who was movingly interrupted by PZ191, William Sampson Stevenson, seen here getting the thumbs-up as she sounded her horn in acknowledgment.....
then it was the turn of the Princess Royal to give a short, but appropriately worded message to the assembled crowd......
when she then turned and pulled at the shroud to.......
reveal local sculptor, Tom Leaper's powerful evocation of a fisherman with heaving line in hand.....
facing out to the open sea where so many remain; the memorial will serve as a focal point for family and friends to visit and remember.
Later that evening as the sun goes down over Mounts Bay, the Scillonian makes her way to Penzance dock.....as an onlooker contemplates the statue in the twilight....
meanwhile, local young skateboarders take advantage of the red carpet and parking cones left over from the official ceremony!

Memorial under wraps

All set for the Princess Royal, the Newlyn Fisherman's Memorial is under wraps and waiting for the official unveiling at 2pm tomorrow. Away in the distance there is some late evening action in the new Orion Art Gallery extension.
Tomorrow afternoon will see the garden of the Tolcarne Inn buzzing with visitors to the unveiling ceremony.

New St Ives boat makes good news for Newlyn

With only a couple of days to go work continues on the fisherman's memorial....



more hot air in Newlyn, this time some repairs to the bow after a shock collision off Mousehole Island this morning - and the submerged object hit? - remains a mystery - and no, it wasn't a floating rock as some wit suggested!



the Jacoba's new scallop handling gear is nearly complete....



at 3pm, the first big whitefish trawler for the port since the Dumnonia in 1988 and the first Steven's family boast since the newly built Rose of Sharon in 1968...



and steams up the harbour to the fish market....

a spacious starboard side mess will keep her crew happy at mealtimes....



meanwhile, down the end of the new quay the Intuition is landing her shellfish to a waiting lorry...
