The secret of Cornish gold!

There has been much talk of mythical 'Black fish' on Newlyn market. The truth is far more spectacular. Here for the first time ever is a photograph of Cornish Gold being produced right under Newlyn Fish Market. This incredibly rare event occurs when the elements combine in unique fusion. Much of the gold ends up here. And lo, just in time for Xmas the Penlee lifeboat gets her new berthing pontoon.

Many hands make light work

The 'Dom Bosco', two weks into her new life in Newlyn gets a helping hand from the crew of sister boat 'Cesca' to land her days haul of shellfish.

Many of the crew on these boats are Latvian or Polish.'Little Pearl', 'Pride of Cornwall' and the 'Pru Esther' land another catch of herring and Cornish sardines.
The sardines are tipped into plastic tubs with iced water and held in the market chill rooms inside the market within minutes of hitting the quay.
The crews from all three boats work together to see that this operation is carried out as quickly as possible to mainatin high standards of quality and maximum freshness.A few minutes later the same sardines are looking good on the griddle....So much so that Kevin is caught red-handed - seems the Cornish sardine is irresistible!

Top tide - top weather!

Guy Fawkes day and not a cloud in the sky or a breath of wind!
Over in Penzance wet dock the Ocean Warden takes advantage of the glorious weather - a good drying day for washing and painting it seems!
At high water the causeway alongside PZ Dry Dock basin has become submerged - who says 4x4s aren't useful?!
Back in Newlyn and down the 'Stone Quay' - what remains of the quarry railway track - here's the miniature turntable for the stone wagons.
And a mystery, what happened here, there are two seperate rail tracks?
At the end of a trip PZ542 the Filadelfia makes her way in through the gaps for the Monday morning market.
On her way in, Girl Pamela PZ6 disturbs the glass-like harbour.
Meanwhile, over in Penzance the local kids' dingy club virtually becalmed at the end of a day's racing paddle their way home.

As the clocks go back...

Penlee Quarry sees some earthmoving equipment activity for the first time in ages - but not because work has started on the new Marina!
Work has started on the quarry slopes - mainly it seems to comply with a number of health and safety issues - the contractors would love to have photographs (or paintings) of roadside quarry buildings from before the 1920s that show the original granite stone workings, like the chutes used to load horse carts. These could greatly assisst in helping to preserve any buildings that are currently buried under earth along the roadside.
Sunday evening saw low cloud completely envelope the port.

The new marina pontoons now provides excellent angling facilities! Here, Lofty and boys from Cosalt reel in a few grey mullet for supper.

Into the mist, Stefan's 'Pride of Cornwall' makes her way out to the Western shore chasing another shoal of Cornish Sardines.

Christmas is coming - and so are the Nelwyn Harbour Christmas lights - volunteers are always welcome - a good excuse to pop into the Fisherman's Arms up by the slip where you will be directed to the organisers while you sample some Hick's Special Draught (HSD) - or see here for more info.

Poor weather keeps the fleet in port.

In the continuing poor weather the Cap Frehel, a stern trawler from the predominantly crabbing port of Morlaix, turns away from the gaps as there isn't enough water to enter.
Meanwhile the Dom Bosco is about to leave for sea trials and a possible maiden voyage, despite the fresh breeze, not much stops the pot boys it seems!

Local inspiration

"Get down on your knees and prayeya", Bill begins the long task of stitching a new trawl together on the Cornishman.
PZ476, Lisa Jacqueline gets a clean hull on the slip.

Down the road near the classic Art Deco swimming pool the latest art gallery puts on a display; many of the works reflect local seascapes. The gallery's name is inspired by the town's port registry letters PZ Gallery.
