Fishermen's Mission fundraiser in memory of men lost on trawler Bugaled Breizh

A crowd gathered in the village of The Lizard to remember five Breton fishermen who died ten years ago when their trawler, the Bugaled Breizh, sank with all hands. Many have claimed the boat was dragged under by a British submarine – although despite an investigation that allegation has never been proved.

To mark the tenth anniversary, an evening of song and stories of the sea was held at The Top House last Wednesday. The evening was also raising money for the Fishermen's Mission in Newlyn. Julian Waring, of the Fishermen's Mission; Jamie Glasby, landlord; and organiser Beatrice Kerno are pictured holding the photo.

It's a Megrim kind of day today

and lighter side...

even the beam trawlers are finding they cannot avoid catching large quantities of haddock despite the headline of the trawl being no more than one metre from the seabed...

white lightning on the market...

big tub gurnards make great sashimi or can be cooked baked in a crust of rock or sea salt - looks amazing when served...

big badass bass...

not so much black gold for the beam trawlers this winter - could be a big season for the anchovies later in the year as they are thought to feed on the eggs of cuttles...

early start for the Govenek of Ladram as new nets go aboard before the sun has a chance to break the dawn...

she might be almost the same length as her big sister, but the latest addition to the Rowse crabbing fleet is dwarfed by the Emma Louise...

Eastenders character tells 7.7 million viewers to avoid eating cod ........... great.

Monday night's episode saw new Queen Vic landlord Mick consoles a tearful Sadie Young as she shuts up shop and closes her salon - all harmless stuff. Then the bombshell dropped in the conversation:

After announcing to him that she and her daughter are leaving the square, she says,

"Well you know that they say, there are plenty more fish in the sea"

He, trying to be helpful, says, "yeah, even with all this global warming, it's teeming with apparently. Just don't go near the cod 'coz it's a bit scarce at the moment from what I've been reading"

Thanks Mick - please try keeping up with the news! - you should have gone to the cafe and read this article in a daily newspaper (published) the day before! http://bit.ly/1mGrqX1

For more information on the health of cod stocks in the sea from the very people who make a living catching it - check out the fishermen who contribute to The Real Fish Fight - http://on.fb.me/1jzRCjv

Thanks to script writer Rob Gittins for, undoubtedly entirely in ignorance, mis-informing 7.7 million viewers as to the state of cod stocks in the UK! Just shows what the industry is up against if such a well respected writer can get his facts wrong.

#eatmorefish and when you do, think of the guys who make it possible!

The caption reads, Men at work, hauling in a storm.

Even with modern fabrics and thermal all-weather gear you get the feeling it's none too warm on deck here.

From the poster: This trawler " Siglan " on herring in the Okhotsk Sea in autumn 2008. Of course in this weather is not trying to sweep?, but in this case, the weather began to deteriorate sharply and had already taken CHifu storm?.

The Breton trawler, l'Estran, aground at the entrance to the port of Saint-Guénolé

A trawler ran aground at the entrance to the port of Saint-Guénolé Penmarc'h l'Estran, from the deep-sea trawler company La Houle grounded on Monday morning at the entrance to the port of Saint-Guénolé Penmarc'h. The five crew members were quickly evacuated. The boat is hard aground and has taken water with a heavy list.

It was around 10am on Monday morning when l'Estran  a deep-sea trawler trawler from the company La Houle in the port of Saint-Guénolé Penmarc'h. The boat was sailing for a two week trip off the south of Ireland. At the exit of the extremely narrow channel editor: even at high water when entering Saint Gue you can see the seaweed floating on the surface  - the channel is that narrow! the boat hit a rock. It seems that with successive storms the channel buoys have moved. The trawler would have made a difference of a few metres which proved fatal. She finds herself stranded at the entrance to the port. The five crew members were unharmed, though had to be evacuated by firefighters.

Water seepage occurred during the grounding, the hull sustained damage and water infiltration. Consequence: it looks increasingly tide should not be enough to recover. Pumps were sent on board early afternoon to drain water. A boom has been put in place in case of a possible pollution. A lifeboat will be brought in during the afternoon and help keep other boats out of trouble.
