A kind of bread, 112 miles South West of Land's End

The weather conditions are creating 'skip' where high frequency signbals are able to skip between the surface of the sea and thermal layers allowing radar and AIS to pick up targets at much greater disntance than normal - the Breton trawler Bara an Aod, one of the fleet of 'bread' boats (bara = bread) is showing up 112 miles off Land's End.

Sea, Salts & Sail Festival at Mousehole this weekend.

Newlyn does its bit to publicise the event......
and you can't miss this sign on the way to the village for the Sea, Salts & Sail festival.......
the Rosa is just one of many old working and sail boats expected at this year's festival.......
created to rival the art deco pool on Penzance Promenade, Mousehole has its own tidal swimming pool........
a feast of tanned sails is set...... just watch those slippery rocks.

Too early for some.

Kettle of pitch used to seal a caulked deck........
looks like an early start is being made to clear the quay for the Fish Festival this year......
Helen Feiller Gallery, one of several in Newlyn......
just about to start the first sale of the morning on the market floor - something that will be a thing of the past in the new fish market planned as the fish will be available for inspection in cold storage while buyers will sit in a buying room at computer terminals bidding against remote buyers from all over Europe -

see a tour of the proposed new fish market here........
but not just yet.......
spic and span new premises for Harbour Hair Salon on the bridge.

Fish handling.

Newlyn has excellent hi-speed transport links with the south coast ferry links, Plymouth, Poole and Weymouth.......

the new fish market with its properly planned fish handling system in temperature controlled conditions will mean an end to these practices - thank goodness for polystyrene boxes that were first introduced for megrim and hake in the early 1980s......
while being out in the sun is not so good for fish, Cornwall's biggest business needs all the sun it can get this season - the forecast looks good for the weekend - apprpriate beach gear available from the Newlyn Harbour Design Centre.......
the Trinity House support vessel Mair is back in town......
back in the water and looking very spruce, the Chicadee makes the Cornish Lass look like she's in need of a lick of paint now........
more good news - the Dry Dock has a new customer in Penzance.

In case you missed it, 'The Skipper' series - Episode 1

A laconic Roger sets the tone for the series first shown on BBc1.

The entire series of The Skipper is available.

Guilvinec photo blog

Across the water, our Breton cousins in Le Guilvinec also have a daily photo blog, with a number of contributers capturing the comings and goings of the port. Most, if not all the larger vessels that feature in the blog have taken shelter or visited Newlyn at some time over the years.

Amongst Newlyn fleet, ex-French boats, like the Keriolet used to visit Le Guilvinec and use the boat hoist on the Lechigat side of the river for major refits and main engine work. There has been talk of having a similar hoist facility created in Newlyn.
