Millennia on Monday
Inshore trawlers and the beam trawler...
Billy Rowney made up Monday morning's landing...
of plaice...
gargantuan gurnards...
and some signs squid are on the move...
this solitary scallop comes complete with a rooftop garden...
while the Padstow netter filled a good number of boxes with a big shot of ray...
the Millennia stole the show with these John Dory...
that top bass man Cap'n Cod ices up his latest efforts...
specimen tub gurnard would make a fantastic tabletop feast in any fine-dining establishment...
signs of things moving from the red into the black on the grounds...
meaty mullet...
there's still a smattering of mackerel around the coast for the inshore punts handlining for them...
an article in the Guardian talks about conger eels being wiped out by trawling as there are very few landed these days - this is not quite as it seems - trawlers go out of their way to avoid the kind of ground that congers inhabit - rocks and wrecks - and as the main fishing method used to catch congers - longlining - is no longer practised by any boats in the south west, consequently, none are landed other than the odd box or two picked up by boats fishing near to wrecks or patches of hard ground...
if you are lucky these cracking inshore red mullet destined for a restaurant near you maybe...
at the other end of the market hake from the netters Ajax and Britannia V should make good money...
with the buyers closing in on their prey...
chasing a good run of 3-4 kilo fish...
"move 'em out"...
all set to sail again.

Saturday is sailing day - even if it means missing your daughter's 5th birthday.
Saturday sailing for some
Coming hard astern...
there's never a shortage of running water on the decks of a fishing boat...
almost time for the Ajax to sail...
while fishing TV's latest star of The Catch, Govenek of Ladram takes ice...
a good day to be out on the water...
as Rescue 192 makes a flypast over Newlyn, a sight that will soon be part of history as RNAS Culdrose hand over SAR duties to Bristows and a new fleet of rescue helicopters comes into service...
two men and a boat head for open water...
followed by the Ajax away on the second half of her trip...
nice enough for an end of season sail...
something to show for a morning's work on the pots...
another one for the DecklyFish pot...
all in a night's work for the RNLI, always there to pick up the pieces of somebody's life...
though this year the ILB boys are lagging behind in the action dept!

The first Celtic, North & Baltic Sea Atlas - preferred bedtime reading for skippers.
Just published!
Based on international research vessel data
The atlas presents a unique set of abundance data to describe the spatial, depth, size, and temporal distribution of demersal and pelagic fish species over an extensive marine area, together with accounts of their biology.
A large number of pictures, graphs and distribution maps illustrate the text. By largely avoiding - or at least explaining - scientific terms and providing extensive references, the book should be useful for both laymen and scientists.
The quantitative information on some 200 fish taxa is derived from 72,000 stations fished by research vessels during the period 1977-2013. The area covers the northwest European shelf from the west of Ireland to the central Baltic Sea and from Brittany to the Shetlands. Although the surveys extend beyond the shelf edge, only taxa reported at least once in waters less than 200 m are included. Typical deep-water species and typical fresh-water species are excluded.
We hope this publication will contribute to gaining a better understanding of the ocean ecosystems.
The Fish Atlas of the Celtic Sea, North Sea, and Baltic Sea contains:
An in-depth reference work on marine fish, this is the first complete overview of all marine fish species found in the North Sea, Baltic Sea, and Celtic Sea. Whereas European research mainly focuses on species of commercial interest, this atlas documents current data of all Western European fish species caught in the period 1977 to 2013.
- description of general goals of research-vessel surveys;
- brief account of the oceanographic features of the three ecoregions;
- overview of the surveys included in the analysis;
- details on the process and interpretation of the extensive data;
- variation of species composition by area and in time;
- information on 201 taxa, grouped in 78 families;
- contributions of 31 authors, affiliated with ICES surveys;
- full-colour pictures, clear distribution maps and graphs;
- 48 text boxes to describe additional details of general interest.

The guys have all gone fishing on #FishyFriday !
Now it is still proper dark at 6am with the sun barely casting any light on the horizon leaves Tom peering into the gloom...
necessitating deck lights still on boats like the inshore trawler, Boy Lee...
much needed as the amount of free deck space is very limited...
apart from a dozen boxes from the Boy Lee on the market there was just a handful of line caught...
fish from the punts working for bass like these from Cap'n Cod...
and mackerel...
otherwise the market was devoid of any trip fish from trawlers, netters or beamers...
leaving cleaning down a quick job this morning...
out down the quays some of the boats are ready to sail...
while the lorry park waits expectantly for Monday...
which should see more than just a single trawler against the fish market...
when the rest of the fleet head for home to land.
