Fish Festival fun shines through the cloud - part I

 
Setting up in the early hours of the morning for the 2012 Newlyn Fish Festival, Passionate About Fish as ever - the main fish display nears completion.....


Cornish luggers Ripple and Ibis outside the netter Ajax that landed hake after a short trip specially undertaken for the Fish Festival.....


which was filmed by Caroline Quentin's ITV crew for her forthcoming second series on Cornwall which she says will get below the surface of those who live and work there......


with an hour to go before the festival is due to start the skies are heavy with cloud and there is concern that many people will be put off attending......


right on cue, the sun just about shines as the RNMDSF head man assures local Mission skipper, Keith Dickson that the Newlyn mission will remain open as long as the fishing community needs it.....


then it's over to Caroline Quentin standing between festival organiser Mike Collier (L) and RNMDSF chairman David Harris (R) to do the honours and declare the 22nd festival well and truly open......


things to do include a chance to see round the fisheries protection vessel St Piran and meet the IFCA crew or look at one of the port's many beam trawlers, the Sapphire.....


Falmouth fisherman, Chris Bean's niche market for sushi fish meant that his gleaming almost still wriggling display of fish looked like stunning as ever.....


a new look for fish merchants Stevenson's drew in the crowds which were now beginning to pour in.....


Newquay's Headland Hotel chef, Sanjay Kumar makes his way to the demonstration kitchen with young chefs in the making from Newlyn's Tolcarne School to cook his version of Star Gazey pie - despite there being a shortage of mackerel on the day!......


one of three performance stages kept the visitors entertained with continuous live music, dancing, Cornsih tales, stories and poetry.......


be a Fishermen's Friend campaigners were amusing passers by with there giant cod.......


and the Help for Heroes scooped a first when they managed to enlist the help of that highly secretive organisation the Graffiti Grannies......

Ajax lands for the Fish Festival


Saturday morning:  Heading out Through the Gaps.......
 and the forecast is for a scuffly night......
 first end away.......
 first tier away......
 shooting at speed.....
 command control......
 anchor aboard.....
 info sent......
 company in the morning......
 the Belem underway......
 and heading south......
 breakfast time....
 first tier aboard.....
 gutting and washing, fish in slush ice.....
 more hake.......
 fish going down to the fishroom.....
 back to sea for the porbeagle.......
 Ed over-ending.....
 gannet patrol......
 Matt on the hauler.....
 Chris watching for fish.....
tea up and bound for Newlyn to land at the Fish Festival.

French and English fishermen en accord!

In the Central Channel area, as a result of dialogue between potters working the resource and fishing areas with trawlers. 

This coexistence of business is managed by the Central Conference Channel for fishermen Bretons, Normans, English and Belgians.

The following cards illustrate updated versions of these agreements.

Maiden voyage for the crabber, Emma Louise


After spending a few hours on sea trials yesterday.......


The first of the Emma Louise's 1700 poys comes aboard safely into the the hands of the boat's owner Mike, glad to be back at sea on his latest boat to join the fleet......

 just to make sure that the deck layout and safe working practice is in place for skipper Mario and his crew.


Morning has broken.......

 Deserted Penzance high street..... 
 on watch.......
 only a few days to go to the Fish Festival.......
 sequel to the Cantebury Tales, Cornish edition.......
 plenty of 'addock this morning.......
 and a few brill too with several inshore boats providing the best quality fish.......
 a smattering of Cornish Sardines.......
 first light........
 and away goes the Dawn Treader........
 for a few minutes the harbour glowed........
 as last of the Gary M heads for the gaps........
 party on the quay.......
 it's a sign........
 king bass heads off into the sunrise.........
 as the big scalloper Jacoba enters the gaps........
 and puts ashore a partial trip.........
 to a waiting Dutch lorry........
 making for the market........
 bound in from the Scillies, the St Mary's lifeboat........
strong onshore winds last week have left the beaches in the Bay covered in weed, shame the local farmers can't come and pick up this superb fertiliser - like they do on Swanage beach - keeps everybody happy..
