'Cags' Lacy wins Queens Gallantry medal for Trevessa rescue.

50 mph winds, heavy seas and then a fire in the engine room heralded in the New Year for the crew of the beamer Trevessa last year. Coming to the aid of the stricken vessel and crew, SAR helicopter Rescue 193 was despatched from RNAS Culdrose with winchman Dian Lacy aboard. After working in 'the worst conditions ever experienced' by Lieutenant-Commander Shepherd, the crew were safely taken off the boat. All members of the helicopter crew have since recieved awards.

Some of these dramatic events are covered in episode four of the Discovery Channel's Trawler Wars as skipper Steve Mosely aboard the Billy Rowney is charged with retrieving the abandoned gear of the Trevssa in conditions that fishermen might play down at times and descibe as 'a bit scuffly'.

Fish for thought.

Seems some of Debbie's more senior customers are becoming truculent.......
despite a big ground sea the sardine boats were out in force overnight.......
bagged and ready to go, monk fish livers make a very fine pate.....
filming in advance of Fish for Thought man Paul's judging debut......
Mr Oliver keeps the bids coming.......
just enough room on the quay to sort the wire......
according to the scientists, consumption of oily fish increase your brain power!

Fisherman rescued from capsized boat off porthleven.

The Donna Mary capsized as she was fishing off Porthleven around 1330 this afternoon. Holidaymaker Nina Schofield captured the incident as it unfolded from the shore. One crew member managed to make it ashore while the other was taken off by SAR helicopter from Culdrose which arrived on the scene, the fisherman was airlifted to Treliske Hospital near Truro for treatment.

Final Mission.

Not imminent but soon, Newlyn's Mission along with six others around the UK will close its doors sometime in the next five years.

A downturn in the size of the nation's fishing fleets and in donations have contrived to make the Royal National Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen take this drastic action in order to reduce its overhead. Alternative ways are planned to deal with the Mission's traditional support role for the industry.

Newlyn's Mission had its heyday of recent years back in the 70s and 80s when large numbers of visiting vessels headed to the South West for the mackerel fishery.

Padstow invasion on Mondays market.

After well above average rainfall for thelast few days, Monday morning saw a bright start to the week with little wind and clear skies.....
it's off with the old and on with the news as the Padstow boys from the netter Berlewen put their backs into overending nets onto a trailer......
in front of the market the Charisma is in the process of washing down after her big trip on the hake.....
after leaving Newlyn at 6pm the previous evening and hours spent searching, a lack of fish in the Bay saw the sardinier Resolute eventually make a big haul off the Lizard, after a two hour steam back to Newlyn to land, the last tub of Cornish Sardine are iced - all hands are looking forward to jumping aboard the new boat when she arrives - more news next month......
an awkward fish even when dead and making life difficult for the MMO, a big blue shark gets measured out at around 185cm in length.....
several good trips of net fish fills the western end of the market.....
line caught bass......
not line caught bass, spot the difference......
a one clawed lobster, known in the trade as a policeman......
big bass trip.....
a good shot of soles for the big beamer.....
has the buyers forming an orderly queue.

Old Quay House, Fowey.

In keeping with the narrow streets of Fowey, one long narrow restaurant in the Old Quay house.....
leads out on to a terrace that provides a constantly changing view as the river traffic passes just feet away....
from the comfort of your table......
including the unlikely juxtaposition of a steam slipper against the backdrop of a UK Border patrol boat making her way up the river.....
eating can be enjoyed inside at the table or out on the terrace, the menu is chocker with local produce (smoked duck in the foreground), the portions generous, the service impeccable - the moules mariniere with big, fat juicy Fowey mussels just perfect. The head chef, aptly named Ben Bass, champions local produce where possible to produce dishes with heavily influenced by the best in traditional french cooking - shades of his time spent with Raymond Blanc.

A tale of two boutiques.

All set for a busy Saturday in the town's one remaining wet fish boutique.....
a more traditional boutique back in Newlyn.......
"we went for a Meadery", familiar local term after a night out......

but if you are going there in a few weeks time, remember the Coombe will be closed.....
will the Meadery manage to keep its doors closed of a Thursday for much longer as the local protests grow?......
bet the Twitchers were busy on Twitter this morning.....
 keep the rubbish coming.......
both sides being rebuilt aboard the Cornishman.......
big meaty cock crab from the Emma......
one bongo at a time.....
