RNLI lifeboat Ivan Ellen is kept busy but not the only boat to rescue vessels in trouble.

There's a mix of fresh and block frozen bait going aboard the crabber Emma Louise.......
the chaps aboard the privately owned Bristol based Douglas Currie get busy scrubbing down the deck under careful scrutiny.....
Trawler Wars star currently undergoing a makeover.....
the low sun at this time of year picks out the flags on the prom in the evenings......
in a busy week that saw several big tow jobs, three Bretons and their boat which now sports a replacement mast of sorts, made it as far as Newlyn eventually under tow from the Ivan Ellen......
the classic boat Ruth, star of several films, suffered a serious main engine problem while on passage, at the same time, the Danmar was returning from Mevagissey after towing the ex-Newlyn netter Huers to her new home, answered the Ruth's distress call and towed her to Newlyn where she awaits moving on to Penzance wet dock.......
plastic punt picked out in the morning light.......
not one to miss out on things, it seems even John Lambourn's Ripple entered the Ivan Ellen's log book as another tow job for the busy station.......
a tow of different sorts, George uses the W&S workboat Chickadee to pull the bow of the James R H away from the quay so she can get to sea......
meanwhile, the port side derrick gets the heat treatment......
 from the welding team.......
never a dull moment in the Star Inn it seems.

Friday is Farmer's market day in Penzance.

It's not the only wet fish shop in Newlyn, but it is the nearest to the market.....
there are signs that the squid are moving in on the inshore grounds......
no doubt the smaller ones will be keeping a watchful eye out for the huge sardine shoals......
the weather will dictate when the scallop season comes to an end and the visiting Scottish dredgers make their way up North again.....
heading off for a feed, a juvenile gull not quite finished losing its baby feathers.....
Badcocks Gallery's current show, Safely Gathered, by local artist Marilyn Browning which compliments the pottery pieces underneath......
their are still a few leisure boats passing through......
while the crabbing fleet wait for bait......
it's good to see the Emma Louise back in action again after having a new main engine fitted.....
where do all the wooden warp drums go?.......
pile 'em high, Cornish Sardines stacked skywards......
a man happy in his work putting up the stalls for the weekly.......
Penzance Farmer's Market, now moved outside St John's Hall and held every Friday.

Plug for next year's Fish fest on MyCornwall TV.

Get the low down from Mike Collier who heads up the team that brought you this year's Newlyn Fish Festival as he introduces old hands like Rick Stein who did the honours and opened the show along with one of the new kids on the block, the Falmouth Greenbank Hotel's chef Sanjay Kumar who just loves it!

Seasonal fayre.

A good handful of late summer toms from the greenhouse, finely sliced runner beans (like spaghetti) fried in a few onions and very finely julienned courgette.....
compliment goujons of haddock dipped in egg and breadcrumbed in the very crispy Panko breadcrumbs (from Chan's Oriental shop if you are lucky enough to live near Penzance).....
late season racing in the Bay.....
only one chance for one of these......
when trawlermen talk of liners they don't usually mean trans-Atlantic passenger ships but these steel sleeves that house the main engine pistons......
one of the stars in the coming Trawler Wars series, Filadelfia.....
and the currently laid-up Lisa Jacqueline where, at the time of filming the series, 'Uncle' Roger Nowell was the Lisa's skipper.....
a long day's work ahead of the twin rigger.

Trial cod and haddock smoke!

Straight out of the smoker - a mix of small cod and haddock fillets.....
with the fillets at the very top of the smoker a much darker colour - and all of the fillets left the skin stuck to the rack which meant that.....
there's a whole lot of cleaning to do!

Trawler Wars - coming to a screen near you - soon!

Two of the Trawler Wars stars in the making - in their youth and languishing at the bar in the Swordfish in Newlyn, from the left, Don Liddicoat, skipper of the Filadelfia, Billy Bunn - skipper of the standby vessel Putford Provider, Roger Coutsoubos currently mate on the Twilight III and skipper/owner Mervyn Mountjoy - ex Ocean Harvester.

Countdown the days - eleven days to go before Trawler Wars hits the TV screens at 9pm on Sunday 26th September. While the rest of the Discovery Channel viewing world may find some of the more unusual language (terminology that is) a little hard to follow, those who are more than familiar with the characters in the series will no doubt find much to smile about at the interaction 'twixt skippers, crews, boats and ports.

The Yourdiscovery website has posted plenty of background information, photos and even guides to the fish being caught and the fishing gear used.

If that wasn't enough, there are a dozen short clips with highlights from each episode - all of them make fishing with a couple of dozen huge crab pots a la Dangerous Catch look somewhat samey - from heart attack to heartache its all in a weeks fishing for the Sou'West beamer fleet.

There is a Facebook page where you can get closeer to the community and the guys who make it all happen.

Take the bait.

As the sun breaks through the cloud, there are still a few boats left in port.....
at 7 am the market remains deserted apart from a solitary box of fish awaiting collection.....
fewer and fewer yachts pass through the port as the weather becomes more unpredictable, this one bound for Guernsey.....
meanwhile, fresh bait gets put aboard the Dom Bosco......
before she heads for the gaps.
