Trelawney

Punts from round the corner in St Ives now brighten up the pontoon berths.....
time to head out on the hunt for Spring mackerel.....
and, as ever, the gulls are keeping watch from on high......
the George Johannes makes a landing during the day.

Tranquility

Back in port with a haul of langoustine.....
the Tranquility waits with her landing gear raised for the transport which will see her prawns eventually make their way back for sale in Scotland.......
back in Newlyn, one of the newest handliners in the Cornish fleet, the Ibis named after another famous Mevagissey boat....
yet another attempt at the Indian Rope trick......
looking cheerful as ever, Geoff, one of Ocean Fish's buyers, raises his cuppa to toast the day.

In twenty minutes, seven in, one out....

The girls on Avarack put their backs into it.....
followed by the guys hard on their heels in Portheras......
if you get the chance pop over to Mousehole for some of Janner's fish 'n chips.....
waiting for a tow round the corner to Sennen when the rig will be used to carry out some serious work on the new lifeboat slipway.....
back into tier after a day's hauling for the Rosannah......
one of the few remaining Milford registered fishing boats heads out......
a combination of neap tide and fine weather means that there are few boats in the harbour.....
except for those landing; here the crabber Pen Glas has boxes of frozen bait waiting on the quay as she lands to a vivier lorry.....
including frozen haddock - only the finest bait is used to catch quality Cornish crabs.......
Gael Force Marine's pots reach the far South West....
the Reds head for the gaps (probably keen to make it in before seeing their team in another dramatic 4-4 game against Arsenal) with a gaggle of gulls in tow.......
Edwin has been doing his bit for fisheries research today......
first of the punts heads back to a mooring.....
on the mackerel boats sometimes two hands are better than one.......
the inshore boats are making good use of the weather to make up for a very poor start to the year for them......
still not much sign of crab moving on the grounds for the big crabbers.......
one man and his dog.....
as they get a wave from the stren of the Filadelfia.....
on her way out through the gaps.

Two-handed Inspiration greeted by a good run of fish

Heading out to see from a mooring.....
after steaming for 4 1/2 hours round from his home port the previous evening in search of mackerel in Mount's Bay, top St Ives handliner Stuart McClary makes his way in to land, in the background are two Urk crewed, Belgian registered beamers in for their Sunday off, one of which will be landing to Newlyn Monday week, part of an experiment to see what their fish will make here as an alternative to overlanding their catch back to Holland....
followed by the now two-handed Inspiration with owner Nick Howell making his maiden voyage along with skipper Dick.....
Anthony lends a hand passing boxes of line caught mackerel across to the punt with the quay-berth.....
then its all hands to sorting the morning's catch.....
and a better sample of fish were found in the Bay this morning......
Anthony and Sturat get to sort their catch before heading back to God's country.....
there's still a nip in the air despite the sunshine......
Dick takes the immaculate punt back to her berth on the pontoon.....
yet more derrick get the straightening treatment.......
the tide provides a resting spot for the local cormorants, or are they shags?....
at lunch time, fresh Inspiration mackerel, headed, tailed and gutted, rubbed with lemon zest, lemon juice and olive oil straight in a hot heavy frying pan - summer is on the way!

The land that time forgot

Looking along Penzance Promenade, a sign that summer is on the way as the temperature difference between sea, land and air collide and cause Newlyn to disappear.....
where two early morning walkers and Tom are silhoutted against the hazy sun.....
as a gull takes to the clearing air....
yet another weekend trip for the Cornwall Sea Fisheries Protection vessel, St Piran who may get to use the heavy sea mist as cover while it lasts.....
bent derrick number four straightened and painted ready to go back aboard.....
Srping cleaning mode for the harbour......
and another sign of the times, the Spiders are on the move again.....
are these Newlyn's very own weapons of mass destruction being forged in the workshop.....
causing much mirth as a bacon butty gets to pose for SeafoodandEatIt's web site latest picture shoot....
Newlyn appears from the mist as it begins to lift.
