#FishyFriday in Nelwyn

With the weekend in sight Friday's market is full of fish caught by every type of gear and boat...

so there was plenty of variety on the market this morning....

with the usual suspects being there in some quantity like these Dover sole and monk from the beam trawler Resurgan

a handful or reds form the Twilight III...

while Roger is still finding his old adversary the John Dory somewhat elusive still...

the netter, Harvest Reaper had a good week's work on monk...

a box or two of eight-leggers...

and plenty of cracking turbot with the beam trawls this week...

while the Spirited Lady never seems shy of lovely lemons...

seems there's always the odd conger with the inshore guys...

after yesterday when expectations for signs that the mackerel might have moved into the bay this morning find's the Don of mackerel men squinting through the handle of his rather slack morning's fishing - not much to show for a 4am start...

though doubtless Dennis will head straight back out to sea again to hunt some more fish down...

a single turbot big enough to fill a 40 litre box...

might well set you back around £240!..

every shade of red and grey gurnard in a box...

pristine red bream...

and some of the biggest spots ever seen on a plaice...

the Ajax made its third landing of hake for the tide...

along with a few boxes of other big white fish - testimony to the highly selective nature of working the larger mesh sizes the boats opted for in order to secure their MSC Certification...

the summer also brings down a crop of scallopers from far and wide...

a handful of inshore trawlers...

and some of the bigger beam trawlers...

so it's a case of make hay while the sun shines...

the Trevessa IV looking spruce after her refit...

a classic clunker built Breton sailing fishing boat, Seiz Avel...

fishing gear is constantly in need of repair and maintenance...

Brixham scalloper,  Pamela Jill...

very few modern boats are built with round sterns - most have a transom stern to maximise the working deck area...

landing time for the scalloper Zara Annabel...

and needing two hands in the back of the lorry all Sam opts to helps...

out and volunteers to operate the winch control to help land 60 bags of scallops...

from inside the wheelhouse...

watched by a happy crewman aboard the Brixham beamer...

as the scallops swing into the waiting lorry...

from the Zara...

inseparable, even in port

Stevenson's new tug boat is looking smarter by the day.

Mid-week market of fish for Newlyn.

The landings board sports a full list of all the boats with fish on the market this morning...

all users of the market will have been cheered by an announcement on Radio Cornwall yesterday morning's Breakfast Show about the future of the fish market...

with the market getting a good mix of inshore dayboat and offshore beam and trawl fish...

like these beam trawler Dover sole from the Billy Rowney...

a trio of haddock...

what fish sports this tail?..

a tubby tub gurnard...

and for the first time in weeks - a good shot of mackerel plucked from the bay...

some of them, as noted by Colin from Mousehole Fish...

were still moving having been landed only a few minutes ago by the godfather of Mount's Bay mackerel, Dennis Pascoe on the Sprigs of Heather...

these two hake look like the had a heavy night ashore...

a box of mixed from an inshore dayboat...

and some big thornbacks from one the remaining Scottish prawn boats still working out west of the Scillys...

with the ambient temperature both outside and inside the market on the warm side staff get fish away to their chillers as quickly as they can...

this morning saw the second day, finishing at 1pm of free dental treatment in the harbour courtesy of the Fishermen's Mission...

and Heidi, dentist Debbie and Maria aiming to oput smiles as big as theirs on the faces of any fishermen who are in need of treatment - given that Cornwall has some of the biggest and longest waiting lists for NHS dentistry in the UK...

that man in red, back at the fishing after 20 years offshore in the North Sea...

with the engine still running after landing it won't be long before...

that familiar hunched father-time-like figure heads back out to sea...

fresh off the slip and nearing completion of a major refit, the Rejoice is alongside the quay again...

rare is the yacht that has the woman on the helm manouvering and the man doing the deckwork - it's worth a thought that if the man goes over the side that the woman is more than adept and confident in being able to bring the boat round and affect a rescue...

ex-St Ives fishing boat looking spruce...

and the latest sardine boat is almost set for the start of the season...

as are the rest of the fleet...

Newlyn under the sign of the crossed lines...

@SmileTogetherUK - the Dentaid team will decamp this afternoon and head for Mevagissey tomorrow and Padstow on Friday...

must be Golowan Festival - the fair has arrived on the prom!
