SAR boys sneak in a quick pint at the Gurnard's Head.

With an ever changing line up of guest beers, which this week includes some Welsh bitter and cider, the Gurnards Head, a superb dining pub with rooms, proves too tempting for the airy fairies.

Newlyn Trail - something to do when it's not beach weather.

Number 3 in the Newlyn Trail is the John Dory, copies of the trail are available in Baron's Newsagent - opposite the CoOp in Newlyn.......
Royden's left to deal with other people's crap left behind again.....
something of a bad habit is developing here.....
bounders and off to chase the scallops......
time for icing up before the start of another tide for the netters......
plenty of dredging power here aboard the Susan Bird.......
looks like Jo has his sights set high.......
the swans and a visiting duck mix it under the bridge.

Vessel Tracker - coming to your screen soon!

Very shortly a new AIS tracking service will appear on Through the Gaps courtesy of VesselTracker.com. This is a sophisticated ais tracking system with a number of unique features.

On this, the 1501st blog posting, is the first screen shot showing the Govenek of Ladram as she leaves Newlyn. The Ben My Chree and the Gary M can both be seen exactly in their berths alongside the quay in the harbour. A full breakdown of VesselTracker's features will appear as soon as the link goes live next week.

Have some hake at Thurley's Fish and Chip restaurant in Helston.

Rally round the 'umble 'ake! Award winning fish restaurant Thurley's in Helston are selling hake and it's better value than cod - big, juicy portions with wonderfully crisp batter and crunchy chips to go with - even after driving back to Penzance with them double wrapped - thanks Leanne!

Hake - top fish!

Landing day and waiting for the lorry to arrive, time to prepare lunch - and testament to the fish they catch, chef for the trip Nathan prepares fillets of finest hake aboard the Govenek of Ladram........
before dipping the fillets in egg and flouring.......
an easy fish stock with the filleted carcass (make sure the fishmonger keeps them for you) is made by adding a glass or two of white wine, fennel (chopped bulb or the herb), chopped onion or shallot, ground pepper and sufficient water - remember to add salt at the end to taste........
tasty but not so good for the waistline - shallow fried fillets in Japanese Panko breadcrumbs.

Never a dull moment in Newlyn.

Another min-dredger passes through.....
with 965 top quality line caught albacore tuna fish from six days fishing, Newlyn's top tuna chaser for this tide is back in port to land.....
the lorry has arrived so its time for skipper Edwards to get busy....
the boys in the fishroom are ready and waiting.....
then its five boxes at a time.....

up to the waiting lorry......
under the watchful eye......

proceedings are interrupted when Shaun gets a free pair of - gloves? to test out at sea.......
after landing, its back in tier alongside the Ben Loyal - with whom things can't get much worse - apart from continuing fuel pump problems, this last trip was curtailed when crewman Kevin suffered a heart attack at sea - the Spanish fleet's hospital ship Juan de la Cosa- complete with a state of the art live video link to a hospital ashore, steamed to the rescue and took the man in question off in a stretcher - after then steaming North for 100 miles to be in range, an SAR helicopter from Ireland flew in to airlift the poorly man ashore - the good news is, apart from not having packed any shoes - Kevin will fly back to Cornwall at the end of the week - comment from skipper Shaun, "and he's only done two trips with Quentin!"......
not the right time of day to be making her way in through the gaps.....
the Elisabeth Veronique gets the one remaining net......
ashore having lost the other......
and just to finish off the day, the Geordie boys are back in town.

Slipping the Govenek of Ladram.

She's only been in Newlyn for a few months but its time to slip the Govenek of Ladram. With her high stem and shelterdeck skipper Phil took action to ensure that he could line up the slip's cradle more easily - to see if his cunning plan worked check out the slideshow.
