Monday morning in Newlyn

Girl Pamela heading off to a foggy sea and another day hauling pots off Lands End...

back in the fish market there are short supplies of fish as only a handful of boats landed over the weekend so monkfish...

megrim sole...

and bass all made good money...

as did this nice little John Dory haul from young Roger Nowell on the Imogen III...

each box sporting the recognised EU grades (for size) weight in kilos and name of the boat...

the first signs of squid on the grounds were evident this morning with enough to warrant four boxes graded by size...

inshore trawlers seldom catch the kind of quantity of monk fish that boats working beam trawls do...

or hake which these days are the preserve of the netting fleet...

now in full swing the Cornish sardine season is with us again...

with one of the fleet picking up a box of garfish - sporting their distinctive elongated heads and unique green bones that only become visible when they filleted...

there's no let up in supplies of summer mackerel from the handliners working from punts like the Ble Belle...

who take every opportunity to catch fish as and when they appear...

other handliners like Cap'n 'Cod' aboard his boat Butts target bass for much bigger prices - though it can take all day from a 6am start to catch a handful - especially of this size and quality...

the alternative for the mackerel men is to go for bulk landings...

the inshore trawler Elisabeth Veronique uses a clean ground trawl to target flatfish like these brill...

or a trawler like the Harvest Reaper uses a rough ground trawl to pick up ray of different sizes...

back in the harbour after the fish auction there's still no sign of the sun breaking through the low cloud...

so the beamer Billy Rowney seems to loom out of the mist...

as do two classic sailing vessels,  the Brixham sailing trawler Leader and Irene...

another iconic feature of Newlyn's past has been removed - the huge fuel tank that supplied the boats for many years - plans have been in the pipeline for many years to pipe fuel down the quay so that the boats have easy 24/7 access to fuel instead of having to rely on road tankers to get down the quays as and when needed...

yet more sheet steel is ready to go aboard the beamer Resurgam...

after the galley/mess has been entirely reconstructed...

Fish on Wheels takes much of their fish from...

their own boat, the Sheila T...

Ocean Harvest, the latest trawler to join the Newlyn fleet is nearly ready for action...

and regular visitor Still Waters is back in town...

also ready for action is the new crane on the end of the Mary Williams quay...

a misty Twilight III at dawn...

continuing its artistic endeavours the Newlyn Art Gallery's latest show is History Painting by Rose Wylie...

the gallery is a few yards from the water's edge adjacent to Newlyn Green and site of the memorial to the fishing industry...

Battery Rockers swimming off the Jubilee Pool will hope that visibility doesn't reduce any more so that they lose their bearings...

out of the water for some hull work...

just the N to be painted in on one pf the Nowell fleet...

the replacement Scilly supply ship, Mali Rose has yet to replace the old Gry Maritha in service...

rope delivery for the beamer Admiral Gordon.
