Cod? Don't mind if I do sir!

No sign of even a drop of rain overnight in Newlyn...

not like the flooding in Coverack just a few miles away on the Lizard!...

three beamers in addition to inshore fish on Wednesday's mid-week market this morning...

with a trio of New Harmony haddock

a brace of John Dory...

a trio of specimen whiting...

Dovers galore from the Cornishman...

while our Cornish cod congratulates our cod cousins up North on being awarded MSC status, after all it is only a mere five years ago that the Sunday Times and other MSM ran a scaremongering story when stocks were already on the road to recovery story about there only being 100 adult cod in the North Sea - the MSC Certification is a great credit to all those fishermen who worked tirelessly and often at great personal cost to achieve the accredited status...

the Filadelfia  even managed to bag a few boxes of langoustine...

lovin' his work, Spike gets down 'n dirty on his bended knees recording yet another trip of whitefish...

which included these three greater weavers...

the sum total of hake caught after five days at sea - why netting is a more productive option and better quality too...

top drawer place from the inshore trawler Elisabeth Veronique landing fish barely 12 hours old...

though squid are still very patchy...

off with the old trawl doors...

mostly beam trawlers in after landing...

though out at sea a jack-up rig and its attendant tugs are sheltering from the fresh easterly breezes...

the new Scillys supply vessel, Mali Rose has been out on sea trials this week...

allowing the Sand Snipe to enter the DryDock.

Monday morning's market in Newlyn

Unusually, not a single beam trawler for Monday's market...

so today's fish are all top-drawer day or two day old fish from over the weekend...

from well known names as the handline boat, Butts...

and others who targeted bass over the weekend...

there are signs of some early squid on the ground with Brackan's Spirited Lady...

and other superb specimens like this stunning red bream...

day trawlers are always good for a wide selection of quality fish, though they are no always lucky enough to pull up a turbot this big - a fish that, on its own, will make around £150 on an average market...

delightful Dovers...

dinner -plate sized turbot...

and it looks like Tom on the Harvest Reaper snuck in a solid landing of John Dory from under young Mr Nowell's nose on the Imogen III...

the inshore boats enjoy good flat fishing at the moment...

though when it comes to fish like hake, they barely get a look in as they inhabit much deeper water and are far too smart to be caught by relatively small trawl fished by inshore trawlers...

there's enough to keep the merchants busy from 6am...

on a Monday morning in Newlyn...

just one of the big hake landed from the Ajax...

young Janner obviously fancies his chances pole and line fishing for bass today as he heads for the gaps...

plenty of yachts in over the weekend...

close-up of the port side dredge gear worked by one of the biggest scallopers in the UK, the Albion skippered by none other than Will Gillespie, ex-Newlyn beam trawler skipper...

the latest members of the Newlyn fleet take to the harbour waters for the first time, cygnets 1, 2, 3 and 4...

morning sun on the Albion...

there are blue and white horses in the Bay and along the prom this year...

great WH Lane fine art auction later this month on the 20th of July in Penzance...

just one of the superb maritime landscapes up for auction.

Swanage, steam, sun and Salt Pig.

A very Turneresque start to the day looking towards Old Harry and Bournemouth...

in Swanage Bay this morning...

where locals can enjoy an increasing trend - the combination of a fresh local meats counter together with...

a fresh local fish counter at the new Salt Pig - and there is a superb restaurant to boot at very reasonable prices considering the provenance of the food they serve - they only serve what is caught that day!...

Swanage also boats an amazingly nostalgic opportunity for steam...

and diesel train enthusiasts with rides to Corfe Castle and now mainline Wareham station - great  day out for the grandkids.

#FishyFriday in Newlyn

More than just a few invisible netters landed for this morning's market it seems as...

there are fish aplenty...

like these spotty plaice...

rows of monk, negrim and other flatfish...

including a dusting of langoustine...

and witches...

although his little chap is probably only a delicacy in some far-flung corner of the planet...

unlike these cracking red mullet...

from Brackan's Spirited Lady...

a few perfectly sized brill...

plaice...

bass...

thornback...

blues...

dolly mixture...

more brill...

pollack...

and a beautiful calm morning.
