Newlyn Artists

Since the heady days of the Newlyn School, the harbour and town continues to provide a home, a working base and inspiration for a host of resident and visiting artists.

So much so that there are now two art schools based in Newlyn.

The Newlyn School of Art, based in the old Newlyn School building at the top of Paul Hill runs a wide range of courses from figurative to more abstarct and innovative painting and printing courses.

More recently, Tim Hall and Henrietta Graham have moved their studio from Mousehole right into the centre of the busy harbour for a real taste of a working port.

Both places offer painting holidays for all levels of skill and experience - very much geared to individual needs - both Hen and Tim are Royal Society of Portrait winners and offer opportunities for both portrait and landscape painting in their spacious workshop studio overlooking the harbour.

Other artists currently living and working in or near Newlyn include:

Henry Garfitt - Henry Garfit is an artist working in the Penwith area of West Cornwall. He makes colourful, abstract paintings and prints working from a wide variety of influences including the St Ives School of the 1950's and 60's (Patrick Heron, Peter Lanyon, Ben Nicholson, Roger Hilton, John Wells, Sandra Blow, Terry Frost, etc) and the Post War Abstract Expressionist Movement

Nick Henshall - The rich tapestry of Nick’s life in Newlyn has added a depth of knowledge and understanding that those merely acting as bystanders are rarely privy to. His art work is inspired by the fishermen, boats and people of Newlyn with whom he has a genuine personal relationship and history.

Glyn Macey -  was born in Newlyn, Cornwall in 1969. He completed his HND in Graphic Design at Falmouth School of Art in 1991. Since leaving college, he has lived in Penzance, Cornwall, his work developing in response to the unique environment of West Cornwall.

Using acrylic, mixed media and an array of mark making techniques he endeavours to capture the underlying essence of the landscape, the essence that shapes the landscape and the people who live in it. Many people see a continental look to his paintings. Glyn uses acrylic, pencil and collage to gain the spontaneity of his work and the 'happy accidents' that he loves. By building and glazing colour he is able to gain a rich depth. He believes that the unexpected unity of colour and texture in mixed media can often create the most exciting results.

Jason Walker  - highly regarded for his mature and sensitive portraits and his thoughtful depictions of everyday objects. His approach to painting is accompanied by a command of tonal values and a refined use of colour, which both inform and give a subtle presence to his chosen subject.
